The Kuck Cup
Doug Kuck started helping the Caledonia ski team during the 2005 season, as a van driver and a person that would do what ever needed to do. He ended up being a volunteer assistant coach till the 2014 season. He and his wife Jenny, did what ever needed to be done to keep the team a live, there was a few times when our numbers were very small and the school wanted to end skiing as a sport. They worked hard to build numbers and to devise ways to raise money to buy equipment, team coats, speed suites and pay for busses. Their efforts helped our team flourish and grow. Doug, a pilot, worked his schedule and vacation days so he rarely missed anything related to the ski team for the nine years that he was involved and Jenny was the team’s communicator, travel coordinator, accountant and organizer. The two of them did this whether they had kids on the team or not (I believe that there were more years without kids on the team than with on the team) and they did all this as volunteers. They were the heart and soul of the Caledonia Ski Team. Doug was always the guy that loved working with our new skiers, their improvement was a challenge that he took very personally and any skier that stuck with the team for 4 years became a very good skier & some very good racers. Because of this passion for teaching skiing and seeing improvement, I thought a middle school award would be a fitting way to honor the Kucks, since our MS racers are the foundation of our program, just like the Kucks! |
Beginning in the 2020 season, the Kuck cup will be awarded to the top 7th and 8th grade Caledonia boys and girls skiers based on their placement and their NASTAR handicap. (Average Handicap in our NASTAR races + average placement in SWMMS race(have to race in 2 races) = score and low score wins) in the West Michigan Middle School GS Series. Here is list of our previous award winners.
