The Southwest Michigan Middle School GS Series was formed the winter of 2020 by coaches from Caledonia High School and Grand Rapids Christian High School as way to introduce middle school students, at their schools, to ski racing through team competition. Both schools have programs for the middle school athletes, that teach the fundamentals of ski racing, and the creation of the race series for them to apply their skills in a fun and competitive format was the next logical step for their programs.
The SWMMS GS Series scored individuals and teams in the following way. At each race, skiers made three or more runs through a GS course and their two best runs were added together to create their overall time. Each team used the placement scores of its top five girls and top five boys to come up with a team score. The team scores for each race were totaled to determine the series trophy winner. Individual medals were determined by using the best two race placements for the skiers of the series.
The 2020 Series took place at Cannonsburg and TBA and in a very close series Caledonia beat Gr Christian. The first year of racing included three races and information on the 2021 series will be released the fall of 2020.
